Plotter or Pantzer?
I’m a pantzer all away. I write a synopsis, to sort of give me a general roadmap. There are certain things I know going in, in most cases. I tried plotting and it was a great exercise, but by the time I’d plotted out a book the way most people do I didn’t want to write it. I knew what was going to happen. I guess the surprise element of “what’s going to happen next?” is part of the joy of writing for me.Light or Dark?
Dark. Story line or hero, I like it dark. Grins. And as our mutual friend Nancy is fond of saying, I like it when it goes BOOM! which is kinda dark. :>Chest hair or bare?
Ahhh, my favorite topic. Men. Chest hair, alllll the way. In one of Diane Duane’s Star Trek Books, one of the characters, Empath Diana Troi, takes Commander Riker to a wedding on her home planet. Everyone’s nude. They’re also tittering (pun intended) over Riker’s considerable chest hair. One of the little old aunties wonders aloud why the human would have so much chest hair. Trio replies, calmly, “Traction.”To me, that just says it all. Hahahah! (You may recall, Tawny, I wrote a whole blog around this topic.)
High Heels or Flats?
Am I allowed to say that it depends? I had foot surgery a few years ago, so some days I can wear heels and some days I can’t. I love heels with certain outfits, but practical me, I like that I can really move in flats or sneaks. I love the way heels make my legs look, that’s for sure. They’re just so graceful and they make you feel even more feminine. ;>Ocean or Mountain?
Mountains all the way. I love how green they are, how magical and mysterious, how majestic. I enjoy the ocean, but only off-season. I just get too hot in the regular summer season.Daytime or Nighttime?
Night. I’m a major night owl. I’d rather work at night, go out to play at night. etc. I am SOOOO not a morning person. (Which is hard with kids)
Jeanne Adams lives near Washington, DC, which is a fabulous inspiration for the kind of dark, thrilling suspense she loves to write. Both her debut novel, Dark and Dangerous, and her current book, Dark and Deadly, received top reviews and a Top Pick from Romantic Times. A Barnes and Noble.com Mystery Bookclub favorite, Dark and Deadly has also been highly touted on the web and on the blog circuit. When she’s not plotting another character’s demise, Jeanne is chasing her boys, her husband or her dogs, not necessarily in that order or at one time; or at this time of year, she’s plotting wicked Halloween fun
h is hard with kids)

Believe it or not some of my best memories are of harvest, I was raised country (way before it was cool) I didn’t think so at the time but bringing in fall fodder (does that count?) make for great memories. Harvesting and Halloween celebrations, fine fall scents and gargantuan gourds all trigger the memories of my youth.
Great alliteration, Dianna! Heehee. I’m guessing you like fall too…
Love it, I can handle cooler temps way better than heat and the mountains are beautiful in the fall, they look like huge patchwork quilts.
I love the mountains in the fall. There are so man y things I miss about living in the mountians, but this is one of the big ones. :> Seeing the colors slide down the mountian day by day as it cools down, then seeing the leaves fall, in waves, down the mountina. Really gorgeous. Then the fist dusting of snow on the hills…Every season. Beautiful
I to am a pantzer, I like having a general idea where I would like the story to go but as i continue it changes to my surprise.
Hey Kristen! Me too. And my agent says, “hey, just send me the first few chapters, I’ll start on them, then read the rest when you’re done.” Uh, no. All chapters are subject to change until the book is done. Grins. I frequently go back and add stuff to Chap. one when I get a surprise in Chap. 15!
My best October memories are from roast hot dogs and marshmallows around a bonfire and raking leaves with my Mom and jumping in the piles of leaves.
Hi Crystal! I love jumping in the leaves. My boys and I love to rake up the leaves and jump in them. It’s a great way to spend the afternoon, isn’t it?
Hi there! Re the chest hair reference: Sorry, that’s not one of my books.
Possibly the reference is to something of Diane Carey’s?
Best! — Diane Duane
Hi Diane!! Wow, I was sure it was one of your Star Trek books, since I don’t think I’ve read many of the series that AREN’T yours! Ha! (Nothing like getting a correction from the author herself! COOL!) I’ll have to dig it out of the back of the shelf and check. Either way, you write GREAT books in the Star Trek series. And to whoever wrote it, I LOVE that…but ya’ll guess that, right? Snork
Oh, and for anyone who loves Star Trek and fantasy, check out Diane’s books. She’s a FABULOUS writer!!
I loved October in Baltimore. Falling leaves, crisp wind, rosy cheeks. Autumn is not Autumn in California. The temps drop about 10 degrees and the lawn gets all green. Yippee! (sarcasm)
Hi Jill! That’s one thing about being out East, wonderful Fall, gorgeously cold and frosty winter. :> (Can you tell Fall and Winter are my favs?)
My favorite memories involve finishing up the canning in preperation for a long, cold winter. Getting out decorations and planning menus for the holidays to come while spending time with the family watching the leaves change color are also important moments to me.
Hi Jody! What a lovely scene you paint. I love canning, although I seldom do it now – too much else going on! – but there’s just nothing like opening a Mason jar of green beans that were cut and packed and canned fresh. Ahhhh! Yummy! Or preserves. I lurrrrrve preserves… Oh, man. Now I’m getting hungry.
Hi Jeanne! I love October in Maryland! Cool temperatures but not usually cold (except last week!). The leaves are finally turning red and orange!
Hey I’ll be out your way tomorrow in Rockville for an open house!
Hi Christie! How COOL that you’ll be over my way. Send me an e offline with the addy and I’ll come by! Grins. I loved last week’s cold temps, and I love seeing all the colorful trees in my neighborhood. Just LOVE it!!
Hey, two of my favorite people EVAH in one place. What joy is this? Hiya Tawny! Hiya Jeanne! Great blog. Laughed at the idea of you chasing all those men in your life! Keeps you fit, girl. Actually I’ve got a completely different perspective on October. October is when our summer starts kicking in. Longer days and lovely weather and lots of floating around in the pool. Great stuff! The hard part is I have to be inside working when I want to be out enjoying the lovely days.
Ooooh, that does sound lovely, Anna! I adore late spring (when we get such a thing in DC) because it’s warm in the day, warm enough for the pool, then cool at night for good sleeping. Grins. Its the summer I can’t abide. I’d never survive and Aus summer! Do the leaves change in your Autumn? I don’t know enough about your flora to know if they do the whole color thing. :>
They change in the colder parts of Oz. I’m relentlessly subtropical here so there’s a bit of a seasonal difference but not much. The height of our summer is awful, though – really humid and sticky and it stays hot right through the nights which is just wrong.
Note to self: No Aus in their summer.
Jeanne!!! I’m so excited you’re here
Its autumn, Halloween is around the corner and yay – you’re here hanging out!!
So, tell us all about Dark and Deadly. I want book deets!
Hi Tawny! *fan girl squee!* I am happy to be here, thanks for inviting me. I’m loving that it’s FALL!!! Can’t wait to do next week’s Halloween blog over on the Romance Bandits. Stop by for some Trick or Treat, everyone!
Ahhh, Dark and Deadly! Not your typical left-at-the-altar story. In fact, the jilted bride decks the jilting groom and tells him to go jump at the top of her lungs, just as the best man opens the door to the church. Everyone gets to hear it, and see it. How mortifying! Grins. Five years later, said jilting groom is murdered, left at the very same altar and Torie Hagen is set up for a fall. Only the former-best-man, the detestable lawyer-best-friend of the jilting groom can help her now.
What Torie mistook for dislike on Paul Jameson’s part, she soon discovers was Paul’s way of getting too close. You see, he’s wanted Torie for a long time, but you just don’t put the moves on your best friend’s girl…right?
That should be NOT getting too close!! Hahah! Got ahead of myself. :>
So, the question is, did Torie do it? Or did Paul do it, so he could have Torie? Or is it someone else, all together? Bwah-ha-ha!
Sorry you asked? Heehee! I just had a wonderful email from a reader who stopped three-quarters of the way through the book to email me. She said she was so excited, she just had to tell me that she was almost done and STILL hadn’t figured out who did it. She said she always figures it out, so she was thrilled. Grins. She’d read Dark and Dangerous too. She’s my new BFF. Grins.
I was also grew up in the country and yes we did a lot of canning, also cut tobacco. What I loved most about the fall was the leaves changing colors, you could look out over the river and see all the beautiful fall colors on the river banks. On halloween we would dress up in old clothes and dress up as hobo’s, because we lived near the rail road. We didn’t have the costumes that they have today. But ours worked just as well.
Hi Quilt Lady! I loved doing the hobo thing. My Mama believed in homemade costumes and I think I was a gypsy or hobo at least twice each. Grins.
Hi, Jeanne!! Hi, Tawny!! Coming in late to say howdy! Lovely to see you, and to think about happy autumn thoughts
Mine are especially happy today since our main computer is back from the shop, and my husband is busy restoring it to something close to its state before the spectacular crash last weekend
I definitely love fall–it’s not too cold (yet) but not too hot, and I love sweater weather and warm fall foods (stews and chilis and soups…) and the cozy times together at home and the anticipation of good family time coming up with Thanksgiving and Christmas… Ahh… good times!
And I’m with you–SOOOOO not a morning person! And yet those kids still are… *sigh*!
Hey Fedora! Couldn’t have said it or described it better. :> You rock. Glad the computer’s back! Yeah! It’s awful to lose one like that, I winced when I read about a “spectacular crash.” Those are painful words when connected with “computer” eek! Wonderful that you could get reconnected to it.
Yeh, what is it with those kids? Echoed Sigh. :>
Hi Jeanne
Love the answers and love your books I have both books and they are fantastic reads I loved them from start to finish. I too love the cooler weather in the country but I also love being near the ocean in winter watching the wind whip the waves around then curling up with a good book
Have Fun
Helen
Hi Helen! Thanks so much for stopping in! YOu’re a brick to support us so much all over the web. Glad you liked both books so much! Grins, Jeanne
Congrats Jill!!
