Gingerbread Houses

Do you decorate gingerbread houses this time of year?  In the last few weeks as I’ve been feverishly tryinggingerbread housejpg to finish up my knitted gifts, I’ve been cozying up in front of the TV watching the Food Network’s various challenges, my favorite being the gingerbread ones.  I just love seeing what people do with this stuff.  I mean -this is sort of what our last gingerbread house looked like (sort of, I can’t find the actual picture of ours):

and this is the kind of thing they create in these challenges.  I remember the first Martha Stewart book I ever saw (waaaaaay back before she was MARTHA) – she had something similar and equally intimidating featured on the cover.  I wanted so bad to be able to create something that amazing. But sadly, gingerbread wonders are beyond my skill.

How about yours?  Do you do the gingerbread house thing?  Are you traditional like me (aka, nobody blinks if you tell them your kid actually made it) or fancy, ala Martha?

Hey Tawny, I haven’t made a gingerbread house since the 6th grade. That was sooooo loooonnnngggg ago. I am amazed at the skills and talents that some gingerbread house makers have. That’s why they get the big bucks and recognition. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Happy knitting too.

    Peace and love,

I did it once but it looked pretty rickety. It was fun, though! Merry Christmas, T!!!

I wish I could do them like they do on those challenges, but gingerbread houses are not my thing. I get too frustrated with them to do them. I think they absolutely beautiful though. They have whole bunch on display here at the George Eastman House, but I didn’t have time to go see them this year. Next year I’m definitely going to go.
