Plotter or Pantzer?
Plotter. But with extra room in the seat of my pants. I mean, my editor requires me to submit an outline. And I really do intend to follow it, I promise. But sometimes there’s this new idea that takes me haring off in this direction… Or an exciting subplot in that direction… I always get back to the outline eventually, but what fun would it be not to do a little exploring on the side?
Historical or Contemporary?
Yes. My romances are all contemporary, set in real cities that I know well (Washington DC for The Mogul’s Maybe Marriage and the Jane Madison series, New York and Minneapolis for other books). But I also write traditional fantasy novels set in imaginary medieval worlds. And I love to read good historical romance. You know, ones set in time periods when the conflict is just inherent between the hero and the strong-willed heroine…Soda or tea?
Tea. Lots of tea. Black tea or green tea or white tea in the morning, with extra points given for berry or lemon or peach flavors. Herbal tea in the afternoon, preferably chamomile or peppermint. Is there really anyone who can write an entire novel without tea?Bunny slippers or bare feet?
Bunnies in the winter, bare in the summer. OK. Not bunnies. Hand-knit felted slippers, made out of the softest wool I could find at the local store. And socks. Sometimes two pair. (I get cold very easily!)Deep kiss, feather kiss, or kiss me somewhere else?
Different strokes for different … books. My light paranormals pretty much max out at deep kisses. But my first category, Mogul, is a bit more scorching… (My mother’s comment: “I’m just so happy to know that you enjoy sex so much.” How to respond to that? No matter what I say, I’ve said too much!)Fact or Fiction?
Both. My characters are completely made up – the heroes and heroines spring from my imagination. But some of their traits are … borrowed. And some specific things that happen to them are … anchored in real life. And Melissa White’s horrific first dates in the Jane Madison series? Those are mine, babe. Every single one of them. Mine. (And I’m alive and happily married now to tell about it!)
My question: Category or Single Title? (This is of particular interest to me, because I “grew up” in the single title publishing world, but I’ve just “graduated” to category with MOGUL!

Mindy Klasky learned to read when her parents shoved a book in her hands and told her that she could travel anywhere in the world through stories. She never forgot that advice. Her authorly travels have taken her through various literary genres. In addition to her Harlequin Special Editions, Mira, and Red Dress Ink books, Mindy has written six traditional fantasy novels for Roc. In her spare time, Mindy quilts, knits, and tries to tame the endless to-be-read shelf in her home library. Her husband and cats do their best to fill the left-over minutes.

I like single titles better. When there are a lot of books in a series I feel overwhelmed to read everything to get the series story. Also, some books in the series may not be as interesting as the others. Thanks for the giveaway!

It *can* be hard to sustain a common tone and quality across a series! Thanks for taking the time to comment!
I love reading both! Most of the time I do the single titles but sometimes when I don’t have a lot of time then I go for the Category. Sometimes it what ever mood I am in or I will switch for one to the other. I’ll read a category, then go to a single title. I know this isn’t much help.
No, it *is* helpful! And I’m the same way – I tend to read category, when I’m looking for a fun break, an escape from the drama of real life, etc… But I also like setting my teeth into a good single title!
Hi Mindy. I love the cover to your book. I like both single titles and category.
Thanks so much! I was *thrilled* with the book cover, which really captures the romance of Washington, DC!
Both… all depends on my mood! Wonderful cover… enjoyed your answers!
Many thanks! My answers were only as good as the questions/options – I had a lot of fun writing them
I like both options depending on my mood. No matter what though, I have to be drawn to the particular story of each book before I’d choose to buy and read them.
Interesting point, Jill – it’s the stories that draw us in, not necessarily the format… Me, I’ve always “met” my characters first, and “learned” their stories second…
Both, Mindy! I love the “knowing what I’m getting” feel of the category titles, but also love single titles. As Jill and Colleen said, it depends on my mood, and on how much time I have to read!
“Knowing what I’m getting” – that’s a perfect way to describe category. We know, but we still want to find the particular path/approach/whatever…
Do I have to choose between them? I love them both, my feelings changes. I don’t always have the same amount of time & I just like to decide at that moment.
Well, Kirsten, *I* certainly haven’t chosen between them – in my reading *or* my writing!
Great quick six! I like both category and single titles.
Thanks so much for taking the time to stop by!
I have enjoyed both. I don’t enjoy ALL category series, though, as sometimes I find it difficult to read them all close enough together to maintain that connectedness. That being said, I just read Linda Warren’s “The Belles of Texas” trilogy (Caitlyn’s Prize, Madison’s Children, and Skylar’s Outlaw) and just loved all three books. In fact, I may just re-read them all before passing them on to others to enjoy!
